Ensuring optimal fire safety within IT facilities is paramount for employee well-being and asset protection. ISE Fire offers top-notch solutions tailored for data centres, server farms, computer labs and other IT facilities throughout Northants and Greater Midlands. From electrical fire prevention to specialised extinguishers, we safeguard your operations effectively.

What hazards affect IT & data centres?

There are a number of unique hazards present in IT facilities which present several fire hazards. Some typical causes of fire in this sector may include:

  • Equipment and wiring overheating
  • Electrical faults or exposed wiring
  • Improperly stored combustibles
  • Malfunctioning cooling systems
  • Power surges or failures
  • Inadequate fire detection/suppression systems
  • Human error during maintenance
  • Arson and vandalism
  • Insufficient fire compartmentalization

Fortunately, ISE Fire is well positioned and experienced to identify these risks; create appropriate service plans; or to draft suitable fire training plans.

What are the legal requirements for IT facilities?

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is the primary legislation governing fire safety in non-domestic premises, including commercial establishments. The order places a duty on the responsible person (usually the owner or employer) to carry out a fire risk assessment, implement appropriate fire safety measures, and provide adequate training to staff.

There are no set rules which apply to every data centre or computing space. Beyond the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the key areas for mitigating fire hazards will be highly specific to the facility itself. By identifying the risks during a visit and Fire Risk Assessment, we are well positioned to provide action points.

  • Means of Escape: Commercial spaces must have clearly marked escape routes, unobstructed fire exits, and emergency lighting systems to help occupants evacuate the building safely in the event of a fire.

  • Fire Detection and Alarm Systems: Commercial spaces must have appropriate fire detection and alarm systems in place, including smoke detectors, heat detectors, and manual call points. The systems must be regularly maintained and tested to ensure they are in working order.

  • Fire Suppression Systems: Depending on the size and layout of the building, commercial spaces may be required to install fire suppression systems, such as sprinklers or mist systems.
  • Staff Training: All staff members must receive adequate training on fire safety procedures, including how to evacuate the building safely and how to use fire safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers.

  • Fire Safety Signage: Clear and visible fire safety signs must be displayed throughout the building, including exit signs, fire extinguisher signs, and fire assembly point signs.

  • Fire Risk Assessments: Commercial spaces must carry out regular fire risk assessments to identify potential hazards and implement appropriate fire safety measures. The risk assessments should be reviewed and updated regularly to ensure they remain effective.
